White Bellied Caiques?
i went and looked at birds today and a Caique caught my attention all the girls working there raved about them and the particular bird was very sweet. I?? more of a give me time to think it over person but my husband was in love so we put a deposit on the bird, after standing around for more than and hour then coming back and sticking around for another hour, and will go back in a couple weeks to get him (we are moving soon and didn?? want to double stress the bird and it gives us time to get ready for him) all i can find is some general info we got a book but i was wondering if anyone had any personal experience and i have seen some mixed info on citrus fruit i live in Florida and have allot of orange tangerine and grapefruit trees in my yard so it would be a very easy fruit to give the bird.
Well first of all. Caique's are the clown of the bird world. They are hyper and LOVE their people. You need to provide plenty of toys for this hyper little one, and be sure to rotate them often so as not to induce boredom.
Citrus fruits have mixed reviews in the avian world. But my Macaws LOVE tangerines. So he gets one or two every now and then. Half of it, no peel. If there are large seeds in the fruit, I suggest that you remove them. They can pose a potiental choking hazard because they are so slippery, your bird might swallow it when he didn't mean to.
Just be sure to watch him after he eats his first bit. Try only one piece at first. He might not like them. I know I have two macaws who will literally fight each other over a slice of tangerine, and one who hates it so much she runs when she sees it.
It all about personal taste. Bannanas, apples, grapes, NO AVACADO, star fruit, mango, papaya (no seeds), and carrots tend to be the favorites among my flock.
Any fruit given should be discarded after 8 hours to prevent mold. But other than that, just read up a little on the species and have fun with your new baby!
They really are huge clowns. Oh. And just a word to the wise. Watch out for your hair if you wear it down. All caique's I have met have a BIG facination with it. AKA, they want to roll so tight into it you have a bun with a beak sticking out.
