Can I put my cockatiel in a rabbits cage?
My cockatiel has a pretty big cage. It's tall and wide enough but it's definitely not a flight cage. The other day I started thinking about the spare rabbit cage I have in the basement. It's not as tall but it's alot longer and I think it'd make a great 'flight cage', and give him more room to stretch out his wings (even though he can fully stretch his wings in the cage he has now). I was thinking about setting it up and making it his new home. The spacing between the bars is just about the same on the rabbit cage as it is the bird cage. The rabbit cage is a bit more narrow but it makes up for it in length and he'd be gaining alot of room. Do you think that'd be okay for him? All he'd really need is a food/water dish that clipped on to the cage because the rabbit cage obviously doesnt have the little doors for that like bird cages do, and some longer perches but I was thinking of using some branches for that because I read that branches are better for the birds feet. What do you think?
At first I thought you meant with the rabbit :-)
As long as the bars are close enough together so the bird doesn't get its head or neck caught in them. Branches are way better for birds' feet; manzanita or fruit tree branches are best for psittacines. Avoid using resinous tree branches (pine or fir) because psittacines didn't evolve around those trees, and the sap can make them sick. Any other hardwood is okay, though.
